- UK Coastal Water Surveys

For UK Coastal Waters we have our own survey vessel permanently
equipped with a dual magnetometer system, colour echo
sounder and DGPS navigator. The key to any successful search is the ability of
the survey vessel to steer along a defined survey grid so that all ferrous
targets within the search area are located. For small targets like anchors,
cannon etc, it is often necessary to define a survey grid with lines spaced as little as 10
metres apart. To achieve this level of control when steering a vessel requires the precision that can only be achieved by computer
guidance. We at Planet have developed our own computer guidance system which uses
both a GPS and a gyro compass to steer the survey vessel precisely along a survey
grid line. While surveying, all data is logged to memory,
this includes magnetometer readings from both tow-fish, seabed depth, tow-fish
depth, tow-fish position and the vessel's position. A wide detection
swathe can be achieved by towing the magnetometers side by side,
spaced apart by up to 10 metres, this configuration cuts down the survey time by reducing the the number of
grid lanes required to completely survey an area. In areas containing magnetic rock
the dual magnetometer system can be used in gradiometer mode to
overcome the local gradient while still detecting ferrous
objects.

We offer a service where our trained personnel will carry out a
magnetic survey on site anywhere in the world. This service can
be very cost effective for one off projects. Our survey engineer will
arrive on site with all the equipment required to carry out a survey
plus sufficient backup spares to cover most eventualities. All data is
logged to a computer and a copy of the data supplied to the customer.
All information regarding a customer's project is treated in strictest
confidence. We have already experienced the situation were we have
successfully located a shipwreck for a customer that reports from
earlier expeditions had concluded that a magnetometer was ineffective
in that location due to magnetic rock.
