MXSurvey II Datalogging Software

The MX Survey II software is a Microsoft Window's application that runs under Windows 7 (32 bit), Vista or Windows XP. The software provides a graphical user interface for setting up the MX500 Digital magnetometer combined with a full feature surveying application. The surveying  application consists of 4 child windows within the main window. The Magnetic Deviation window displays a chart of the magnetic field intensity measured by the tow-fish, while the Depth window shows a graphical representation of the seabed depth with the tow-fish flying above it. The plotter window shows the boat's position and the track of the boat since the start of the survey. A user defined survey grid can be overlaid on the plotter along with symbols representing magnetometer hits, shipwrecks, marker bouys etc. The information window is used to display the tow-fish position along with data relevant to the boat position and the current survey grid lane.

The software can be configured to support either a single tow-fish system or a dual tow-fish system. In dual mode the data from each tow-fish is displayed independently within its own child window, or if preferred, the difference in the magnetic field measured by each tow-fish can be shown in gradiometer mode. All data is logged to memory and files can be viewed later for analysis. Data can be exported in a format that is compatible with 3D plotting programs like Surfer. 3D plots of  magnetic deviation against tow-fish position or seabed depth against boat position can be created. The software is under continuous development, new features added in 2011 is that facility to allow large search areas to be broken down into more manageable smaller survey grids.

The data from the Control Unit is displayed in  four child windows within the main application window. Each of these four child windows provide a graphical display of the associated data. To view the detail displayed in each  child window click the appropriate button on the left.

The display shows the replay of real survey data, the boat track is shown in red with the boat position shown as a small yellow cross on the track, survey grid lane spacing is 20 metres. The cursor representing the boat can be moved along the track showing all measured data at each location. The yellow flags shown on the boat's track indicate possible targets and were placed on the track during the survey. The Depth display shows the tow-fish depth of 14.9 metres and the seabed depth of 17 metres. A magnetic anomaly is shown in the magnetometer window, while the information window displays the boat's position and the tow-fish position.

Dual Magnetometer Display

In Dual mode, the software displays the output from each tow-fish in its own window. The depth of each tow-fish and the seabed can be seen in Depth Window. In gradiometer mode a single magnetometer window shows the difference between the two magnetometer readings.

Note:- The image shown above is actual magnetometer survey data using a dual magnetometer with the tow-fish towed from booms out on the side of the boat. Tow-fish separation is 7 metres, survey lane spacing 20 metres.
